Walkway construction in Tracy CA - a path that stays level and sheds water

If the path to your door is cracked, sunken or turning to mud, we'll build a concrete or paver walkway on firmly packed ground.

A curving gray-paver walkway with pale stone borders crosses a landscaped lawn toward the street.

What does it take to build a new walkway in Tracy?

Walkway construction means building a new path to your front door, side yard or backyard, either by pouring concrete or by laying pavers on a packed base. At Quality Tracy Concrete and Masonry, we build both for homes in Tracy, CA and the cities around it.

Most people call when the old path is cracked, lifted by a root or sunk in spots so water puddles on it, or when a yard never got a real path at all. The price moves mostly with the path's length and width, whether you go with concrete or pavers, and how much old material and soil has to come out before the base goes in. The schedule turns on the material you pick and the weather. When I come out, I'll write all of that up for your yard in plain words.

How we handle walkway construction

  1. I start by walking you through poured concrete and pavers for your path, and once you've picked one, our crew marks the route and digs it out. For pavers, we clear out roots and debris and pack the ground well, because a paver path only stays flat when the soil and base under it are firm. Then we set the base and bedding, lay the pavers and fill the joints. For concrete, we pack the base, set the forms, then pour and finish the slab. We lay pavers only on ground that isn't soaked, so a wet stretch can push our start back. When the path is done, we clean up and haul off what we dug out.

  2. A new walkway often runs past other work in the yard. If you want a low garden wall along one side of the path, we handle brick wall installation too. Our stone masonry covers steps, borders or a stone edge where the path meets the lawn, and the same crew can build it so everything lines up.

Why Tracy homeowners call Quality Tracy Concrete and Masonry for walkways

  1. I look at every path myself

I come out to look at every job myself, and our crew of masons does the work with me running it. That means the person who checks your soil and answers your questions is the one on the job when the base goes in.

  2. In business since 2017

For years I was another owner's right hand, running jobs and answering homeowners' questions, before I started this business in 2017. That's where I learned to explain what I plan to do and why, so ask me anything, because a good question at the start often saves a mistake later.

  3. Tracy permit paperwork handled for you

When a path meets the public sidewalk, Tracy wants plans, traffic control details, insurance paperwork and fees before it issues an encroachment permit, so we apply for it with the city and set up the inspections. We're fully licensed and insured, and if you'd rather pull the permit yourself as the owner, we'll tell you what we need from you.

On a walkway, the ground under it matters most, so it's worth having someone look at yours before anything gets poured or laid. Call (209) 237-1005, email contact@tracyconcreteandmasonry.com or send us a note, and tell me roughly how long the path is, whether you're leaning toward concrete or pavers, and whether it meets the public sidewalk.

Walkway questions from Tracy homeowners

How long does a concrete walkway take compared with a paver walkway?

Poured concrete usually goes in faster than pavers, because nobody has to lay and grout each piece by hand. If the shortest job matters most to you, I'd lean toward concrete. If you want the look of pavers, plan on more hands-on time.

Do I need a city permit to build a walkway in Tracy?

If your new path meets the street or the public sidewalk, the part in the public right-of-way or on City-owned property needs Tracy's encroachment permit. The city's list names sidewalk and curb repairs, not walkways, so for anything else, ask Tracy's Development Engineering Division at 209-831-6400 or encroachment@cityoftracy.org before any digging starts.

What license does a contractor need to pour a concrete walkway in California?

California's concrete contractor classification covers forming, pouring, placing, finishing and installing flat concrete work like a walkway. The state raised its small-job exemption for unlicensed work from $500 to $1,000, but it only applies when the job needs no permit and the person employs no one. That means a path that needs Tracy's encroachment permit calls for a licensed contractor.

What causes a paver walkway to sink?

Soil that wasn't packed well under the path is the usual cause, because how well that ground is compacted decides how much a paver walkway settles. Roots, rocks and debris left in the dug-out soil should come out and be replaced with clean, packed gravel. When you compare bids, ask each crew how they compact the soil.

How much does a new walkway cost in Tracy?

I'll give you a written figure after I see your yard, because the price of a walkway comes down to things I have to measure. Pavers usually take more labor than poured concrete, and the style of paver, tearing out an old path, extra base for soft ground, and tying the path into steps or a wall can all add to it. Call (209) 237-1005 and I'll come take a look.

How deep should the base be under a paver walkway?

There's no single depth, because the base under pavers depends on foot traffic, soil type, how well the soil drains, moisture and climate. That's why I set it after looking at your soil. Guidance for paving slabs and planks also calls for a bedding layer that drains water, so stone dust and screenings don't belong under those.

  • Brick wall installation

A low brick wall along your new path can frame a planter bed and give the edge of the yard a clean, finished line.

  • Stone masonry

Stone steps, borders or a stone-faced planter can carry the look of your walkway into the rest of the yard, built by the same crew.
